Suanjaya Kencut is a visual artist whose practice extends mainly across painting, sculpture and installation. His work draws its inspiration from traditional Balinese art as well as from the contemporary installations among which he grew up.
Dolls are the central subject of his work. Originally from Bali and now based in Yogyakarta, Kencut remains deeply influenced by his native island. Although he does not directly use the visual codes of traditional Balinese painting, every element of his creations is bound up with his subconscious perception of Bali. His works arise from his personal experiences — from what he has seen, felt and lived through, whether happy memories or more difficult experiences that have left a lasting mark.
The characters he depicts often take the form of dolls with innocent, expressionless faces. These figures originate in a body of childhood memories: the Hindu religious ceremonies of Bali, Barong performances, and the large ritual puppets that fascinated him deeply.
The Balinese visual environment also plays an essential role in his world. Temples richly adorned with repeating carvings, traditional textiles with elaborate patterns and dominant colours, and the profusion of decorative ornament all feed directly into his formal language. These elements resurface in his dolls through repeated motifs, decorative compositions and a vivid chromatic palette.
Later, learning fashion from his cousin allowed him to develop a deep knowledge of fabrics, materials and contemporary garment design. That experience shows in his works through characters dressed in textiles with simple, repeating patterns, heightened by bright pop colours.
Through his work, Suanjaya Kencut seeks to create an emotional connection with the viewer. Although his art is deeply rooted in his personal history, he wants to leave everyone free to project their own interpretation onto it. Eyes, which he considers the sincere reflection of the soul, and buttons, symbols of the link between different pieces of fabric, become metaphors for this relationship between the work and its audience.
By choosing to depict deliberately expressionless characters, colour takes on a fundamental role in the narrative. The tones of the figures, like those of the backgrounds, build the atmosphere specific to each work and play a full part in its emotional dimension.
