Born in Accra, Ghana, in 1988, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe grew up surrounded by colour, rhythm and family, one of six children.
His earliest dreams were about football, chasing movement and light across the pitch. But it was above all the hand-painted cinema posters that once animated the streets of Ghana that left a deep mark on his imagination. Those vibrant, expressive, larger-than-life portraits awakened an attraction to image and emotion that has guided his path ever since.
He entered Ghanatta College of Art and Design, where he spent four decisive years developing his technique and finding his artistic voice. Art became for him a way of seeing the world, of celebrating the beauty, dignity and quiet strength of everyday life.
Today Quaicoe lives and works in Portland, Oregon. His portraits become windows onto the inner strength of his subjects. His luminous figures, set against vivid monochrome backgrounds, stand as symbols of pride, resilience and self-affirmation.
He explains that what draws him to his subjects is their inner power and their bearing, which he seeks to understand by putting himself in their place.
