Raúl de Nieves (born 1983 in Michoacán, Mexico) is a contemporary artist, performer and musician based in Brooklyn, New York.
He pursues a multidisciplinary practice combining sculpture, painting, installation and performance. His work relies on simple materials — beads, fabrics, everyday objects — which he transforms into highly ornamental, colourful pieces.
His visual world draws on Mexican culture, Catholic traditions, theatre, carnival and the queer and punk scenes. From these he builds a personal iconography around ideas of transformation, the body and identity.
He has exhibited in major international institutions, including the Whitney Biennial (2017), the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami and the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston.
