A product of the 1980s New York graffiti scene, he began painting in the New York subway before developing a very free, energetic abstract style. His work moved quickly from graffiti towards a more gestural painting, influenced by abstract expressionism.
Based in Paris since the 1980s, he has become a major figure of street art in Europe. His world is characterised by dynamic compositions, layers of tags, vivid colours and spontaneous gestures, creating an impression of constant movement.
