Detail of the work

Don Mateo

Don Mateo, born in the early 80s, grew up with hip hop culture and quickly developed a passion for graffiti.

In 2003, he joined the Beaux Arts de Besançon and then the Facultad de Bellas Artes de Cuenca in Spain... Art was never to leave him again! In 2010, Don Mateo moved to Lyon and made it his new playground. He soon began covering city walls with his famous portraits: anonymous people who inspire emotion and energy. His leitmotiv, his ambition, what drives him? To act as an urban antidepressant and question painting!

Like Zorro and his sword, he draws his lines with the tip of his scalpel to create emotion and surprise, revealing emptiness and sculpting light through the glances he captures. He overturns urban codes to share his view of the world and contradict movement with his own unique style. The portrait is a pretext for dealing with the issues of painting (the figure, line, light). By oscillating between painting and sculpture, these portraits take on meaning. They reveal the fragility of our existence with subtlety, poetry and a touch of mischief. "I'm inspired by life in general, and then I do what I feel like doing... My pieces are sometimes committed, but it's not activism. It's more an expression, a look at a subject. I'm more inclined towards art, giving a message to denounce quickly leads to illustration, in everyday life... I prefer to touch on notions of poetry, of things we don't understand, to tend towards a feeling...".
